Some new YouTube videos about Facebook privacy

I was helping a friend today who had gotten off of Facebook because of privacy concerns. Of course, I wanted to let her know about the new Facebook privacy options in case she wanted to go back to Facebook.
I found three videos on YouTube that I shared with her. Now I can share them here with you. Three experts tell about what Facebook has in terms of security, and also what they do not have.
Here is one link:
http://www.youtube.com/profile?user=ConnectSafely#g/u
And another:
Facebook privacy settings - what you need to know:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MTpa3AS39uA
And another good one:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TGkUA84ftYU
I think the best advice anyone can give about Facebook, and about the whole web in general is NOT to post anything online that you would not put on a public postcard. In other words, Facebook is just The Internet configured for ease of use.
But I think it is a lot of fun anyhow!

BGAMUG meeting is tomorrow, Tuesday, August 24th, 2010 at 6:30 p.m..

Hi all!

This is Betsy, the BGAMUG Club's Webmaster. This meeting should be very interesting tomorrow. We will be learning about files and folders. Jerry will tell the members and guests how he keeps his computer files organized. His presentation is called Creating, Naming, and Organizing Folders.

Also, it is that time again to elect new officers. Do you want to run for office? There are a few openings for people to run for office this year. This is a good way to meet other members, bounce ideas off each other, and help the club too. You are needed. The club does a lot of good things, and this is your chance to give back and give of yourself.

There are open nominations this meeting, so plan to speak up if you are interested. The meeting is held here:
Place:Bowling Green Technical College, 1845 Loop Street, Building F, Bowling Green, Kentucky. A sign will be posted, and there is plenty of room there.

As usual, guests are very welcome, so if you are thinking of attending, tomorrow is a very good time.

See you there!

Some photos from our meeting yesterday 5-25-10

Here are some photos from yesterday's BGAMUG meeting on Tuesday night, 5-25-10.

We had a discussion about questions about computers, then President Jerry Gillette had a presentation for the club about how to use a scanner.

We learned about all-in-one printers that can include scanners, how to use setting buttons to customize our scans, and what makes for a good looking black and white and color scan. We also learned something about resolution and improving the looks of old photographs.

Nobody won the Door Dollars drawing, so maybe someone will win it next time. Also, we have a new VP of Protocol, Jeri Steele.  Congratulations, Jeri! I hope I have your name spelled right. Just let me know if not. :-)

A few fun computer jokes

I was updating some blogs today and thought I would put some funny jokes and sayings here.

Here are some cute jokes that I got from the http://computer.cleanwebjokes.com/ site today. They are from their Bumper Sticker page.

I have just picked three of them. You can read more at their Bumper Sticker page.

"1. BREAKFAST.COM Halted...Cereal Port Not Responding

5. Access denied--nah nah na nah nah!

26. Error reading FAT record: Try the SKINNY one? (Y/N)

 29. Backup not found: (A)bort (R)etry (P)anic"

I love these! Add your favorite in the comments section right after this posting.

Have a book, disk, or computer something to share?

We are starting to bring things from home to share with other BGAMUG club members. If you have something you are willing to share with another member, bring it to the meeting next time.

You can also bring a card to go with it so the person borrowing it can jot down their name and info.

This is a good way to still have a library in the club, and not burden somebody with lugging it in and out every meeting.

Questions? Just ask about this at the meeting. Our next meeting is on April 27th, which is the fourth Tuesday of next month. Come one, come all! Guests are very welcome.

Monday, March 22, 2010

The BGAMUG next meeting will feature Wheel of Fortune and a presentation on Facebook.

A reminder: tomorrow at 6:30 is the next meeting for BGAMUG (The Bowling Green Microcomputer User's Group).

We will have a short presentation on Facebook.
I thought the Wheel of Fortune Game was today too, but it won't be until April 27th, our next meeting.

So come one come all. Visitors are most welcome and we won't charge anything either.

The APCUG site and some neat things it offers for our group!

I found the APCUG site today and definitely think it could be useful for BGAMUG. I bet some of the members are already using it for ideas and articles.

Here is the site and a short description of what I found today. I am sure there are other neat resources here, too:

APCUG - http://www.apcug.net/ We belong to this group. It is the Association of Personal Computer Groups. They are mostly talking about the Phoenix Regional meeting they had in February. They feature their latest  Jerry Awards here. Plus they have help for their Member User Groups here, like articles, computer tips, articles about communications, and a link to a site called Dave's Bytes, which is not being updated right now. Maybe he is too busy with his radio show, which scrolls around the top of the page.

(from the site) Here are the articles they offer about Communication:
A Journey Into the World of Logo Designing Guenter Schott
Newsletter Submission Guidelines Guenter Schott
Design and Layout of a Newsletter Linda Gonse
Design and Layout of a Newsletter Guenter Schott
Editor's Job Description Fallbrook PC User's Group
How to Fill Your Newsletter John Weersing

How to Write a Press Release Ken Fermoyle

What Graphic File Extension to Use Clarke Bird
Are Legal and Ethical Questions Being Ignored? Ken Fermoyle
8 Things to Know About Building a Website Linda Gonse
PR Tips Ken Fermoyle
Inside Secrets of Free Publicity Ken Fermoyle"

They also have ideas for fundraising and How to Grow Your Membership, among other things.

It is definitely a great resource. Please leave a comment on things you find here, or other things to post here on the BGAMUG Club Blog.

Also, if you want to write an occasional article here, please email me or leave a comment. The more editors and writers, the better!

Our Board Meeting went great!

We had a really nice Board meeting. We got to see a neat automated clock, plus a new-style combination paper holder and clipboard that Jerry brought to the meeting.

Some of the officers had dinner and chatted until the meeting started.

One member had to leave a little early to see the premiere of LOST, her favorite TV show. (OK, it was Betsy...)

We talked about how excited some of us are about the upcoming meeting's presentation by new member Jeri Steele. She will talk about Using the Internet Effectively for Genealogy Research.

Jerry talked about a game he is getting ready, based on Wheel of Fortune. He was very excited about it.

OUR NEXT MEETING: Our next meeting is on Tuesday, February 23rd.

The meeting went great

The meeting went great with Greg Ericksen at the International Center today. We talked about donating computers to the group and even possibly making a nice computer lab for the refugees there.

I didn't take pictures, but will upload some here soon. For now I will put a generic picture on the posting. Something nice.

We took a look around and saw the tentative choices for the computer room(s) and storage room(s).

Up next: a visit to Abel Court to see how they are set up. I will keep you posted about this.

Where did this photo come from? I downloaded it from Morguefile.com. You can use any of these pictures you want there without worrying about copyright. They have a Creative Commons license that says

Video about FREE computer classes (Word, Excel, The Internet on a Mac)

Hi BGAMUG group!

I had a video link here that told about some upcoming computer classes that are FREE at the Bob Kirby branch, but it got taken off by the TV station at the source.

Tina Brewster will be giving classes in Word, Excel, and going on the internet for Mac users. I would think that all computer users could benefit by the class, if just to see how a Mac works.

Sign up before going to each class. This Thursday's class is already full, and so might the other class. Class attendees will bring their own USB mouse.

Thanks for stopping by!
