This is my own opinion, and not anyone else's.
But I have wondered why people don't want to be officers in the BGAMUG club. I don't mean NOBODY wants to, but most people aren't elbowing each other out of the way to be the first person to sign up for that.
Some people HAVE wanted to run for office though, and this will make the elections more fun next month.
Maybe people think it would take up too much time. Here are other reasons I bet people don't want to be an officer.
#2. It would tie up another evening to go to officer's meetings.
#3. The job sounds uninteresting.
#4. People think they can't do the job because they don't have qualifications or enough know-how.
#5. People think that the job would be too hard.
#6. Nobody wants to hurt anyone else's feelings.
#7. They don't really know what is involved in being an officer.
Can you think of any other reasons?
Leave them as comments if you want.
Thanks,
E. Sheppard

Facebook settings - some links to help.
Facebook News: As you probably have heard, Facebook is getting ready to unroll many new changes.
There is a way to get ahead of the game and have your settings in order too. I found another great site today to help with this. It is another link for adjusting Facebook settings.
Here is that link:

It goes well with these other sites that are also good:

And here is the newest: What's Coming Up on Facebook - a YouTube video by Kay Hebbourne.
I will list other links as I find them.

The BGAMUG Computer Club meeting yesterday went great!
About Last Night's Meeting of the BGAMUG Computer Club
Jerry shared about how to print out items larger than regular size, free education on the internet, other selling sites besides Ebay, how to put pictures on a computer, what to do when your computer freezes, scanning documents with an OCR program, resizing photos, free education sites, how to save money using online sites, how to streamline your startup information for Windows, and a few SEO tips.
Members shared their liking for Expedia, Priceline, Southwest.com, Travelocity, SoKyShop, the Bowling Green Craiglist site (because you can actually meet a seller) and Hotel.com. Jerry suggests playing with these to see what happens.
Other good advice: use your security programs!
Here are some free education site links from last night's presentation:
http://www.homeandlearn.co.uk

This is just PART of what Jerry talked about. Come to our next meeting as our guest (it's free) to find out even more.

The actual full name of the BGAMUG Computer Club is the Bowling Green Area Microcomputer User's Group.
It hearkens back to the early days of computer use. There still are many User Groups all around the country.
The APCUG group is the Association of Personal Computer User Groups. You can use their Group Locator Service to find a group near you to join.
These are mostly local groups that get together to learn more about computing and also have fun.

A funny computer poem for people over 30...
Can you remember when?
![]() |
| A font head for an IBM Selectric? Looks familiar. |
Everyone is putting it on as "author unknown" but I know you're out there, author!
Anyway, here it is:
A Poem for Computer Users Over 30
Remember When...
A computer was something on TV
From a science fiction show of note.
A window was something you hated to clean
And ram was the cousin of a goat.
From a science fiction show of note.
A window was something you hated to clean
And ram was the cousin of a goat.
Meg was the name of my girlfriend
And gig was a job for the night.
Now they all mean different things
And that really mega bytes.
And gig was a job for the night.
Now they all mean different things
And that really mega bytes.
An application was for employment,
A program was a TV show.
A cursor used profanity,
A keyboard was a piano.
A program was a TV show.
A cursor used profanity,
A keyboard was a piano.
Compress was something you did to the garbage,
Not something you did to a file.
And if you unzipped anything in public,
You'd be in jail for awhile.
Not something you did to a file.
And if you unzipped anything in public,
You'd be in jail for awhile.
Log on meant adding wood to the fire,
Hard drive was a long trip on the road.
A mouse pad was where a mouse lived,
And a back-up happened to your commode.
Hard drive was a long trip on the road.
A mouse pad was where a mouse lived,
And a back-up happened to your commode.
Cut you did with a pocket knife,
Paste you did with glue.
A web was a spider's home,
And a virus was the flu.
Paste you did with glue.
A web was a spider's home,
And a virus was the flu.
I guess I'll stick to my pad and paper,
And the memory in my head.
I hear no one's been killed in a computer crash,
But when it happens, they wish they were dead.
And the memory in my head.
I hear no one's been killed in a computer crash,
But when it happens, they wish they were dead.

The April 26th 2011 BGAMUG meeting went great - both the SIG and the regular meeting.
Some highlights from the BGAMUG meeting Tuesday April 26th
We had a great Genealogy SIG (Special Interest Group) meeting. Jeri Steele had a super presentation and shared some websites and tips with all the members including how to organize records, and how to proceed with a genealogy search. We will talk about Worldcat.org (and other things) next meeting, which will be at 5:15 at the meeting place, before the next regular meeting on Tuesday, May 24th.At the regular BGAMUG meeting, Joe Easterling of Western Kentucky Computers talked about User Accounts and how you can set them up, including the differences between different Microsoft operating systems. This can be a handy way to have others use your computer without having them able to finagle too much with it or look at your files and folders (depending on your OS/Operating system.).
The date of June 11th is set aside for the BGAMUG Potluck Picnic. Gary and Karen will host again. BGAMUG members are asked to bring tables and chairs to set up. The time is 12-3. We will be coming at 12 noon, and eating at 1.
April 30th is the Simpson County 4th Annual Earth Day, where BGAMUG helps at the event. BGAMUG will be accepting old electronics and taking them for recycling. Members who want to go to help are to contact Joe, Ray, or Jerry so they can carpool to the event. They are also asked to bring table(s) and chairs. Here is the article online about the event last year.
![]() | |
| Photos from last year's Simpson County Earth Day event. |
We talked about the sound system some. Members were advised to update their router security too.
Karen wants members to email her with program suggestions. What do YOU want to hear about at a future BGAMUG meeting?
(from Jerry) Filehippo.com - this is a great site for getting updates and program downloads. It is also a great resource for free things.
The next E-Board meeting is May 3rd at the Catfish House on Cumberland Trace.
Kathy Jill reminded us that on May 21st there is a CASA event with vendor booths available. It is a car show event at the Best Western Hotel. Email her if you want a booth.
Neva told us about the next Fountain Square Players play, "Southern Hospitality." She is in it. It plays at the Phoenix theater on Chestnut Street the 19th through the 21st of May, Thursday, Friday, and Saturday at 8 p.m., and Sunday at 3 p.m. Tickets are $10.00 for students and seniors, and $12.00 for adults, $8.00 for children under 12.
All members are urged to bring computer magazines to share next month. They had some this month too, with many Smart Computing magazines there free for the taking.
Send your articles to be in our next newsletter to Sharon.

I found some of Betsy's BGAMUG links
Hi, BGAMUG Computer Club fans!
OK - I know I put "I found some of Betsy's BGAMUG links" as my blog title. The reason is that although Betsy is really me, someday other posters may post here too. I think it will make this posting easier to find later on.
I am excited because I found some of my notes that I put online from a former BGAMUG presentation. The presentation was about Buying and Selling Online. Here are those pages, which I posted on my Betsyanne website.
BGAMUG Page One - this page talks checking items for condition, doing research, leaving feedback on the Ebay site, and how long to list an item.
BGAMUG Page Two - this page continues by talking about how to find out what people want to buy, how to screen out unwanted bidders, how to be a trusted seller, how not to spam, and information about ebook selling on Ebay (it is not allowed the way it used to be allowed by instant download). However, there are ways to get around this.
BGAMUG Page Three - more about buying and selling online - PayPal, SquareTrade, mediation, and communications.
BGAMUG Page Four - how to block a bidder or buyer on Ebay, using Auctiva, Amazon, more hints.
BGAMUG Page Five - About Penny Sellers (on Amazon), ULine, using the nine-digit zip code when mailing, keeping records, other auction sites online, helpful web sites.
I hope you find these pages handy. I hope to update ALL of my pages soon, and have already started doing that. It is a learning curve!
