BGAMUG September Auction Meeting September 24 2013 UPDATED

Get ready to have fun at our Auction meeting on Tuesday, September 24th.

UPDATED - this posting includes a map and meeting instructions.

Last year's auction was so fun. I got some great deals. Our members Paula and Jerry are going to be helping, plus more members.

If you can help, contact Jerry.

Here is the latest news from Jerry G.

"We are pleased to announce our September meeting will be in the BGTC Building F. (Same as last month.)"

"If you are bringing items for the auction, we will be there about 5 PM.

There will be no Genealogy SIG meeting this month."

Last year we had lots of neat items at the auction. This year we have computer items, a Garmin GPS with accessories, a wireless MP3 headset, a photo printer and a Kindle!

Also from Jerry:

"...members are asked to bring items to the meeting to be auctioned off as a
BGAMUG Fund Raiser. The items do not have to be computer related, but should be in good functional condition. Items that do not sell will be returned to the member donating them..."

Our August meeting was fun. I learned a lot about Computer Shortcuts.

There were some fun tips at the latest BGAMUG Meeting.
YourKeys Font

I learned how to (much more quickly) access special characters and save time doing work with them. One character I want to use on Facebook is a heart. <3 br="">

There was another group at our (new) meeting place. So we moved back to our OLD building (F) and moved to the right, to a new, bigger room. It is on the same side of the building as our old room, just go to the right all the way down the sidewalk.

Next time, we may be there again. I will post here when I and they find out.

We got some good handouts too. The most fun for me was talking about fonts.

Our Next meeting is our fun Auction, Tuesday, Sept. 24th. Bring quality computer items, good printers, other computer stuff PLUS other useful quality items in good condition to sell for the Club.

The Genealogy SIG (Special Interest Group) was also very interesting. I think I'm learning by osmosis here, and hope to be able to do great things later on with it.

Guests are always welcome at BGAMUG meetings.

In addition we will cover some speedy and more productive time saving tasks you can accomplish in document creation and navigating the PC screen by using the keyboard more and the mouse less.
To top things off I’ll show you how to insert characters into your emails and documents that
do not appear on the keyboard, like; ¢ ™ ® ° © » ± ……"

The picnic was fun! I loved the homemade food. Our next meeting... more.

Well, our host and hostesses at Diamond W Farms (Gary and Karen Wickliff) certainly outdid themselves for the BGAMUG picnic.

I want to thank them for their terrific hospitality. It was fun to see everyone. We have some pictures to share later on too.

Also, I got to see a beautiful horse, and a redecorated hanger area there.

Our next meeting is on Tuesday, August 27th. A Genealogy Special Interest Group will meet at 5:45.

The meeting may be in Building H, Room 133.
Or the meeting may be in the older location. (Building F).

An FYI Update: BGAMUG Computer Club news for July.

Here is an update for BGAMUG Computer Club members and friends.

Well, that was interesting last month! We had a meeting scheduled, but there was no place to park, as the school was re-doing the parking lot.
So we are waiting to hear about where we will meet next month. I have gotten a few emails and have put some information here.

Right now, we have some meeting ideas which have probably moved a bit.

July, Jeri Steele (Photo Editing in Office 10)

August - Jerry G - Keyboarding 1001

September - Auction (This event is really fun!)

The BGAMUG Board meeting is now July 9th.

I hope everyone's computer is doing fine. :-)

Meeting Cancelled!

Tonights BGAMUG Computer Club meeting for 6:30 has been cancelled, as has the Genealogy Sig meeting.

Why? Because the parking lot is all torn up.

I could not see all of it, but was called as I was driving over to it. I could see some big white pipes there, and some mini-mountains of asphalt and dirt.

Darn! I was looking forward to going. Sorry if anyone went there and could not find it. I would have put it here if I'd known.

Our next meeting is Tuesday, August 23rd. I hope the parking lot is done by then!

The Board meeting went great. I tried some hot pasta too.

The meeting tonight was full of plans and a couple of surprises too.

There are plans for a July Picnic, and also a class taught by our intrepid teacher guru, Jerry Gillette, who will talk about Keyboard Shortcuts.

These Keyboard shortcuts can save a LOT of work time.

The calendars are on order, and the Christmas Party planning is also well underway.

I tried the hot pasta, and so did somebody else. It WAS hot.

Members, remember to be saving your computer items and other items for the great BGAMUG Computer Club auction to be held in August.

Again, our next meeting is Tuesday, June 25th. Bring a friend, and join us!

Last night's meeting went great. We learned more about CCleaner, plus more.

As a Mac user (for now) I wasn't sure I would get much out of learning more about how to operate Windows computers or getting neat software for it.

But I got to see CCleaner demonstrated up close and personal on the screen, and it looked pretty easy to do. I am considering getting a PC to load Corel on. I miss being able to make interesting logos using Corel.

So I will probably be getting CCleaner (otherwise known as Crap Cleaner) for it.

Here is a link where you can download CCleaner. http://www.piriform.com/ccleaner

Our Tech guru, Joe Easterling, explained that the free version was very good and useful.

I will add some more info. from the meeting here or on the Newsletter soon.

Google Glass - is it a computer? Sort of. Would you wear it?

Via Planeta on Flickr.

Are you thinking you will get a set of Google glasses?

Maybe not right now, but later?

They had a news story about these tonight. Someone used them in Times Square, in New York. They took some photos and got directions.

They do cost a lot. My husband said he would probably pass on them. But when the apps are made, I'll bet having a pair of Google glasses (or Google Glass with no "es"?) would be fun.

I think the price will probably go down.  And I'm curious. I think it would be fun to try these out. I hope they become affordable in the future.

What do you think?

Microsoft to bring back its "Start" button? Is that something you would like?

Is this something you would like?

I think I would. I tried to navigate a Windows computer with a new OS about a year ago. I could not find where to go!

Maybe a start button (like I'm used to) would help. I am used to using a Mac, but I used to use a Windows OS before. It would help me possibly use one again.

Why? Because not all programs are made for both platforms (think: Corel!)

What do you think?

Here is the (pretty interesting!) article I found today via Yahoo News.

Microsoft told to bring back Start button as ‘a sign that it listens to its customers’ by Brad Reed.

Some things I have learned lately - - from Betsy, BGAMUG Webmaster 2013

Fun Musings about the BGAMUG Computer Club and more.

Art credit

By E. Sheppard

Hi, all!

This is Betsy, webmaster in the BGAMUG Computer Club.

I saw that the BGAMUG Blog had not been updated for awhile, so I'm going to write today about some things people are talking about online (that I have looked at) are:

People are excited about the new Google Glass that is coming out. What do you all think about these new glasses that Google will be making?

Apple is coming out with a new watch too that you have probably also heard of. Other companies are watching this very closely. I wonder what they will be like.

More and more people are discovering Google+. I know I have been using it lately to find new articles. Some of the people I know from Squidoo are using it for advertising. Others share new tech discoveries there. I have made several groups there, and also have joined others. Some are tech-related, others are writing-related.

People in the BGAMUG Computer Club are using smartphones and are looking forward to learning more about apps that are popular for them. We have already found out about some of them.

Also, we have recently learned more about iTunes too. One thing that happened to me lately is that I was in touch with Apple customer service about my personal iTunes songs I used to have. I say USED to because I have a new Apple ID now.

The tech advisor on the other end of the phone at Apple helped walk me through bringing my old tunes over to my new name. I really like having these songs back. I had almost given up on being able to access them.

It's neat to realize (as many of our members did at our last BGAMUG meeting) that nowadays people have computers inbedded in many products they use. And we don't just have computers anymore. We have smart phones, tablets, and more that act like computers too. So there is a lot to learn about all of these. But I personally think it is worth learning about each new discovery.

I have been using some apps on an iPad and found out that although this item is useful and you can do a lot on it (like checking email and etc.) you can't run huge programs on them because they simply are not made for them.

What things have you learned lately? Share them as a comment or comments here.

Club members and others: if you would like to do a posting here, just let me know.

Have an exciting, great, and fun week, everyone! And thanks for stopping by.

A new and fun website design for BGAMUG - - this year sometime!

We are trying out a new website design this year.

One of our most hardworking members, Jeri, is working on it right now.

I think it's good to try out new things and have new designs every so often.

Here is something else new: (new to me!)

Ghost horses...

It's a picture of some horses in the yard of Bashford Manor in Louisville. Bashford Manor is a bed and breakfast there. I recently got to spend some time there.

This house used to have many horses. It doesn't any more. Just statues of them.

Anyway, it's neat to look at new things every so often - - houses, and web sites. So stay tuned!
